Placement Test

For English courses, we use the Oxford English Placement Test. This adaptive test automatically adjusts to your language level. To confirm your placement based on productive skills as well, we will also ask you to complete a short writing task and a brief conversation.
To ensure that you and your classmates are all placed appropriately, please register for the placement test in advance.

Tandem

What exactly is a tandem?
A tandem is a linguistic and cultural exchange between two individuals with different native languages. It is a collaborative approach to language learning in which both partners learn each other’s language. Tandem partners meet regularly and dedicate equal time to each language – ranging from conversation practice to shared activities. The possibilities are endless.

How can I find a suitable tandem partner?
Simply complete the registration form, and then the matching process begins. You will be notified as soon as a compatible tandem partner has been found.

How are tandem meetings organized?
Tandem partners plan when, how often, what, and how they would like to meet and learn together. A typical tandem session devotes roughly 50% of the time to each language, with short intervals for feedback and corrections.
Example: One-hour meeting:
• 25 minutes in language A + 5 minutes of feedback
• 25 minutes in language B + 5 minutes of feedback

What if I lose my motivation?
Try out different activities that match your language level and personal interests, and communicate openly about your wishes, goals and expectations. Your interests do not need to be identical - you can use the language as a medium to explore new topics, activities, or perspectives together.

I can’t think of any activities
Here are a few ideas to help make your tandem sessions more engaging and varied:
• Talk about current events in your respective home countries.
• Discuss intercultural topics or differences related to lifestyle, education, or traditions.
• Exchange opinions about your favorite films or shows, or watch an episode together and discuss it at your next meeting.
• Discover artists or music groups together.
• Practice everyday situations through role plays, e.g. a job interview or a doctor’s appointment.
• Play interactive games such as Kahoot, Pictionary, or Activity.

We cannot meet in person. Does this also work online?
Yes, absolutely. You can use various platforms for online communication, such as Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Discord, instant messaging services (SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.), or e-mail.

How can tandem learning help me improve my language skills?
• Set clear, realistic, and specific goals.
• Develop a learning plan and keep a journal to record your progress.
• Incorporate and actively use new vocabulary, phrases, and structures encountered during your meetings.
• View mistakes as valuable learning opportunities rather than setbacks.

Why choose tandem learning instead of language-learning apps?
While language-learning apps such as Duolingo provide pre-designed lessons, they may not always meet individual needs. A tandem offers a personal, authentic, and interactive learning experience through real conversations. Furthermore, our project provides a safe and supportive environment -  with clear guidelines, no anonymity, and dedicated contacts to assist with any tandem-related concerns.

What if my tandem partner isn’t a good match or if other issues arise?
If you encounter any difficulties with your tandem partnership, feel free to contact us in person or by e-mail. Your enquiry will be handled confidentially, and we will work together to find an appropriate solution.
